Chamber’s Read Aloud Day held Feb. 12 at area schools
TORRINGTON – Northwest Connecticut’s Chamber of Commerce’s Education Foundation and the Y Literacy Volunteers held the 29th annual Read Aloud Day Feb. 12, at elementary schools around the region.
For the first time, Chamber members collaborated with the Y Literacy Volunteers to recruit readers.
The group is “an army of volunteers who work with both children and adults to ensure that they have the reading and English language skills necessary to succeed in today’s world,” according to chamber CEO JoAnn Ryan. Y Literacy Volunteers provide free tutoring services to both students and tutors in Litchfield County.
This year, more than 400 volunteers read to more than 7,500 students in grades Pre-K-6. Each grade level heard the same book selected by a group of library media specialists from area schools.
